Empowering Elderly Care with Solar: Residencia La Golondrina’s Path to Sustainability
February 25th, 2025
In Gijón, Spain, Residencia La Golondrina, a non-profit elderly care facility, has taken a decisive step toward energy sustainability. With high energy demands from medical equipment, kitchen cold storage, and essential daily operations, the facility sought a cost-effective, high-performance solar solution to reduce reliance on the grid and reinvest savings into infrastructure upgrades.
Through a collaboration with Bet Solar (distributor) and ASP Energía (installer), Residencia La Golondrina installed 66.55 kWp AIKO N-Type ABC solar modules, designed to maximize energy generation within limited rooftop space. The project leverages an East-West orientation and a high DC/AC ratio to match the facility’s energy consumption curve, achieving an impressive 80% self-consumption rate—without battery storage.
Faced with multiple module choices, ASP Energía selected AIKO’s 605W N-Type ABC modules over conventional TOPCon alternatives due to their superior efficiency, partial shading optimization, and long-term reliability.
- Better efficiency of land utilization: In the same rooftop area, AIKO’s N-Type ABC modules provided 4,54% more installed capacity (66,55 kWp vs. 63,80 kWp for TOPCon).
- Enhanced Energy Yield: The AIKO system is projected to generate 69.772 kWh in the first year, providing 8,23% more lifetime energy production over 30 years compared to TOPCon modules.
- Optimized Financial Performance:
a.€15.000 in additional revenue over the system’s lifespan.
b.Break-even point: 7,49 years (compared to 7,97 years for TOPCon).
“AIKO’s modules have not only exceeded our expectations in terms of energy output but also provided long-term financial benefits. By reducing our reliance on the grid, we can allocate more resources toward improving our facilities and enhancing the quality of care for our residents.” explained Carlos Joglar, Maintenance Manager of Fundación La Golondrina.
ASP Energía’s Partner and Co-Founder, Borja Cueto-Felgueroso, also praised the decision to partner with AIKO: “We needed a solution that could maximize power within a limited space while ensuring reliability. AIKO’s N-Type ABC modules delivered exactly that—more energy, less space, and a sleek design that integrates seamlessly with the building. In addition, AIKO’s strong company background and comprehensive warranties gave us confidence in the long-term performance and durability of the system, making it the ideal choice for this project.”
Residencia La Golondrina’s commitment to renewable energy highlights the broader shift toward sustainable solutions in social health applications. By choosing AIKO’s N-Type ABC technology, the facility has unlocked a pathway to long-term energy savings, lower carbon emissions, and a more financially sustainable future. With its relentless pursuit of ultimate photovoltaic efficiency, AIKO continues to drive humanity toward a zero-carbon society.
